CIT Excellence Award

On June 14th, 2013, Joanne Green Executive Director of MHAPC received a New Jersey CIT (Crisis Intervention Team) Center of Excellence Award in recognition of her efforts to bring CIT to Passaic County. Sergeant Lynette Butler, a member of the William Paterson Police Department was also awarded for her outstanding leadership as the Passaic County CIT Law Enforcement Coordinator. In 2009, they created and co-lead the Passaic County CIT Task Force to identify and address the systemic issues that presented barriers for diverting those with mental illnesses from the criminal justice system to the mental health system.

The task force is made up of representatives of mental health and law enforcement organizations in Passaic County. They have worked to develop a CIT curriculum tailored to meet the specific needs of communities in Passaic County. As a result of these efforts over 150 law enforcement personnel and close to fifty mental health professionals have completed the 40 hour program in Crisis Invention Training. The next training is scheduled to begin on October 28th--November 1st at the Passaic County Police Academy and the class is already fully enrolled.

URGE THE GOVERNOR TO SIGN PARITY!!

Parity will save lives and money by ending the discrimination that exists in health care. It requires the State Health Benefits Plan and School Employees’ Health Benefits Program to cover treatment for alcoholism, other substance-use disorders, and non-biologically based mental illnesses under same terms and conditions and to the same extent that it covers other diseases or illnesses.

The Turrell Fund was founded in 1935 by Herbert and Margaret Turrell. Its principal interest lies in support of organizations that help youth, with special emphasis on the needy youngster.

Beefsteak Bonanza: A Big Success!

Close to two hundred people attended our first annual Beefsteak Bonanza on June 14th It was a very successful and fun event for everyone! The tricky tray prizes were plentiful and the beef steak was delicious. The music by Brookwood was awesome. Many thanks go to our Big Bonanza Sponsor: Investors Bank and to our other sponsors Corrados and Steigner Pharmacy. Also thanks to the fabulous sounding band Brook wood for donating their time. Many thanks go to Cindy Giardina the Vice President of the Board of Directors who served as the Beefsteak Chair. She spent countless hours making this event our most successful fundraiser yet! We were able to raise funds to support our mission of helping families and individuals affected by mental illness.

The evening was topped by a presentation of the 2013 Vision and Achievement Award to Dennis Salata, who recently retired from St. Mary’s Hospital in the Behavioral Health Department after 35 years of dedicated service to individuals with mental illness. His family, friends, and fellow workers were all on hand to congratulate and celebrate his achievements.

The Richard Landry Memorial Volunteer Award was awarded to Dennis Biscelglie for his outstanding volunteer service at the MHAPC. For past year he has been volunteering every day serving as our front desk receptionist. Dennis is upholding the legacy left by Richard Landry of community service and devotion to helping people in recovery.
